Simply Orthodox ☦: Share Orthodoxy with Others →
simplyorthodox: There’s a saying that Orthodox Christianity is the “best-kept secret” in North America. But should our faith be so unknown to the people around us? St. Romanos the Melodist tells us to imitate St. Photini, the Samartian woman, and share our faith: You were not worthy of having what… While I understand the push toward actively engaging in conversation about the...

Moving to Texas →
hesychia: undercovernun: While there is plenty in this news story about Glenn Beck’s plan to move to the Dallas area that may turn your stomach, only the very last sentence puts real fear in my heart. Meanwhile, Beck is gearing up for his “Restoring Courage” rally in Israel next month, a sequel to the “Restoring Honor” rally he held in Washington the same time last year. Glenn Beck?  In...

Sums and balances
Helping with a tiny baby at the beginning of this week slows everything down.  Tasks rush around and demand time, but looking at that little, perfect face, all the speeding demands sound like they are underwater.   GRE prep, publica….tion….s…….P…..h…..D……she is so small.  Happy.  Needy. How could I have forgotten how small we all are, how needy,...

Doggie skin study pt 1
Now that I have my dog back (thank you married housing), I am going to tackle the issue of her skin problems.  I still believe she has a flea bite allergy, ie her skin is hypersensitive to flea saliva so even when she has flea preventative, the bite will make her scratch. Dogs, especially German Shepherds with their dry skin, will often get “hot spots” where they scratch off all the...

I haven’t posted in a while, due to the chaos surrounding getting married.  It was beautiful, stressful, wonderful and weird.  I’ve changed my name.  It feels like I need a junior high notebook to practice writing it, Mrs. LOVE LOVE LOVE.

Mohammed Radwan was release from Syria.  Much rejoicing. Still to write a post on the Duke conference, but it will come. Nathan is getting baptized next week.  First time I’ve ever seen an Orthodox baptism.

in the midst
of planning and worrying about wedding reception details, the world continues, sometimes in horrible ways.  This past weekend I staffed a conference at Duke on US Sponsored Torture.  I plan to write a more extensive post about the conference, but right now I want to mention that on Friday a friend’s brother, working in Damascus, was taken by the Syrian government and is being held without...

held together with tape and glue
I am not exaggerating to say, I am barely holding myself together.  My list to accomplish today seems impossible.  Every day seems that way.  Finishing wedding invitations to send out- a month behind.  Printing and licking envelopes and sticking address labels, and in the back of my mind planning a paper on Karl Barth. I need to buy wedding shoes.  I need to buy wedding gifts.  And I just printed...

Reasons to only get married once
- When I get antsy, I cook. When I’m alone, I eat everything I just cooked. - Wedding planning is a pleasant way to say more details than any one person can handle. - By the time we get time alone, I’m so tired that I am worthless for good conversation. - 90% of all this event planning has nothing to do with being married. - I’m just not that girly aka why do I care about...

Lent and the Consumer
This is the last month of my semester, a mad dash to the finish line.  This is the last month of writing papers, PhD prep, and event planning.  Every week I am completely certain that I won’t make it, but then something happens, some divine intervention, and I do. It’s a strange experience to be more stressed than I’ve ever been, busier and more stretched, with less time to...

long distance sucks
I am an increasingly unhappy person.  The goal is SO close, I can almost see it, the married life!  But it’s 87 days away.  Damn. I miss sitting on a porch with my dog and studying outside.  Everything on the seminary campus is in upheaval, construction updated everywhere making noise.  I want some sunshine and happy dog to run with, and someone to make dinner for- and a life I enjoy. 87...

speaking the truth
I’ve been reflecting lately on the political scene, especially in Wisconsin with teachers’ benefits and unions.  It’s a bizarre set of talking heads on the news networks, talking like no one understands how backwards it is to TAKE MONEY FROM TEACHERS.  Especially while the banking industry coasts on bailouts, unscathed. It seems like morality is skewed.  The Christian churches...

Appreciating the stress
Man, I took on a lot this semester.  But I have A LOT to do tonight- no time to rest.   So while I’m studying Greek vocab, K’naan gets me all pumped up.  Especially reflecting on his life in Somalia, I am outrageously privileged to be studying something, anything without threat.  I get to learn Greek, read old books, and all for love of the subject.  If I ever complain, let me...
